Painted Hills at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument looks like it is should be on another planet with the deep reds, greens, and blues out there. There are a few places to park and hop out for short hikes and enjoy the scenery. We loved the 3 mile hike at Blue Basin nearby.
Smith Rock is a fun destination for hikers, climbers, and those looking to see a huge boulder jetting straight out of the earth in the middle of nowhere. This place is so pretty it’s hard to put your camera down.

Brookings is a fabulous destination because you get to see so much on the journey down highway 101. It’s a far drive, so best to make a long weekend of this one. Our favorite place to stay is at a cute cabin resort with private hot tubs overlooking the ocean called Whaleshead Beach. The view of the stars is amazing at night.
Along the way you can stop in Florence, a town full of wild landscapes that invite you to explore dunes, forests, beaches, and lakes. You can hike for miles without seeing another human, it is the perfect escape from the city. Threemile Lake is a favorite destination, it’s gorgeous out there! Takes about 3hrs driving time from Portland to arrive to Florence.
